In this episode, I explore what it means to trust yourself without certainty.

Many of us wait for guarantees before making decisions, but real self-trust isn’t about knowing exactly what will happen.

It’s about trusting yourself to navigate whatever comes next.

This conversation is for you, regardless.

Why We Crave Certainty

SPEAKER_00

It's your host, Mariana Thomas, and today we're talking about something that sounds simple but can be surprisingly difficult. Trusting yourself without needing certainty. Because if we're honest, most of us want guarantees. We want reassurance. We want proof that we're making the right decision before we make it. But life rarely works that way. There was a time when I believed that confidence came first. That once I felt completely sure, I would know what to do. But over the years, I've learned something different. Clarity often comes after the decision, not before. And that changes everything. Because if you're waiting for certainty, you may end up waiting much longer than necessary.

The Certainty Trap

SPEAKER_00

Here is the certainty trap. We tell ourselves, I need more information. I need more time. I need one more sign. I need to think about it a little longer. And sometimes that's true. But sometimes what we're actually waiting for is certainty. The problem? Certainty is often unavailable. Especially when we're growing. Especially when we're stepping into something new.

What Self-Trust Really Means

SPEAKER_00

What self-trust really is, in my opinion. Self-trust isn't knowing the outcome. It's trusting yourself to handle the outcome. That's different. Very different. When you trust yourself, you stop trying to predict every possibility. You stop trying to eliminate every risk. You stop treating uncertainty as danger. Instead, you begin asking, can I trust myself to respond to whatever happens? Can I trust myself to learn? Can I trust myself to adjust? Can I trust myself to begin? Why we struggle with this? Most of us were taught to avoid mistakes, to get things right, to make the best decision, to choose perfectly. So uncertainty feels uncomfortable. Not because uncertainty is dangerous, but because we were taught that mistakes mean failure. The truth is, some of the best decisions you'll ever make won't come with guarantees. They'll come with a quiet knowing, and that's enough.

A Real-Life Gut Check Story

SPEAKER_00

I experienced this recently when I was invited to be a guest on another podcast. On paper, it looked like a great opportunity. More visibility, more exposure, more people hearing my message, and there was nothing wrong with it. But something in me felt unsettled, not fearful, not nervous, just not aligned. I couldn't explain it logically. I didn't have proof. I didn't know whether saying no was the smartest decision. What I did know was this. It didn't feel right for me. And I had a choice. I could ignore that feeling or I could trust it. So I trusted it. Not because I had certainty, but because I trusted myself. And that decision reminded me of something important. Self-trust isn't about being sure. It's about being honest.

What Changes When You Trust

SPEAKER_00

Here is what changes when you stop chasing certainty. You spend less energy overthinking. You make decisions more cleanly. You recover faster when things don't go as planned. You stop looking outside yourself for constant validation. And you begin building a deeper relationship with your own wisdom. Not because you're always right, but because you're willing to listen. My tip and a practical way to check in.

One Question For Your Next Choice

SPEAKER_00

The next time you're facing a decision, ask yourself, am I waiting for clarity or am I waiting for certainty? Those are not the same thing. Clarity says, this feels true. Certainty says, prove it first. And life doesn't always offer proof in advance. And my final message to you is trust isn't built by getting every decision right. Trust is built by honoring yourself consistently, decision by decision, conversation by conversation, choice by choice. And over time, something shifts. You stop needing certainty because you start trusting yourself.
