Do you remember the time when you last took a proper break from work? Worse, when you're on vacation, do you catch yourself checking on emails and notifications?
In a time where "hustle culture" is evident, all of us should learn how to take care of our health and energy by taking a rest. If you think you don't have the time, I feel you - I've been there for 12 years - and it almost cost me my life.
In this episode, I'll share with you the importance of taking proper rest, what happens if you overwork, and the consequences I faced for working unnecessarily hard for 12 years in my corporate job.

Yes, my friend. What happens when you are overworked, over-stressed, and you are not taking care of yourself by taking a rest. So without further ado, let's get to it.
Welcome to Mindfully Recharged with Mariana Thomas. In this podcast, Mariana brings you mindful conversations with people that will develop and recharge you from the inside out, so that you can increase productivity in your personal and professional life. This is Mindfully Recharged.
Okay, friends, welcome back. This is your host, Mariana Thomas. In today's episode, I want to talk to you about what happens if you don't rest. Yeah, I'm talking about when you are working really, really hard, or doing whatever it is out there in the world. And you are not taking the time for yourself. Okay. If you are a person who is always busy with work, or school, or anything that you are doing a bit in the world, you need to take a break from it.
Yes, I know, you're probably thinking, I'm too busy to do that. I have so much to do. But let me tell you, my friends, working non-stop, will only exhaust your energy, even more in like the old saying, "work can kill you."
Yes, it's true. Listen, I have been there. I've worked and worked and worked really hard for 12 years at a job that was really consuming up energy. Yes, I loved my work. I love the people that I work with. I love my clients. But I wasn't taking a rest. I wasn't taking time for myself. And the time that I was taking off, I was actually at work. I remember those days where I will say okay, I'm going to take a vacation, I'm going to take a week off. And then I will change my mind by saying I'm just going to take PTO. And I'm going to stay here at work, working and on vacation. Maybe?
No, I wasn't on vacation. I was working well on vacation. That is not resting, my friends. Also, I used to travel, you know, when I took some time, and I will be checking on my computer, checking on my emails, because who knows what emails I needed to respond to. Oh, my God who needed me? The world could've been caught in a fire if I wasn't there.
That's not true. Those are stories that we create because we just want to please people. We just want to make sure that everyone is taken care of, but us!
So this is why it's necessary for you, my friend. Working in offices and companies and even in your own business to do things that you love doing in your spare time. And if you don't have any spare time, find some spare time. Trust me, you can do it. You are just telling yourself that you don't have enough time. But that is not true. I used to tell myself all the time, that I was too busy to do this and to do that. And even I will tell my friends that I hadn't had the time to meet for lunch or to meet for dinner. Or to meet over the weekend. I was too busy for everyone. Even for myself. That's not a good thing.
So I want to ask you this question. Do you think about all the things that happened when you were was you weren't joining? Meaning, when you're busy, how everyone was doing? What projects were due, what tasks, agenda finished? What else do I need to do? I'm sure you are asking all those questions, even when you get home from work. Oh, my God, what else do I need to do? What if these thoughts could be eliminated, my friends? Had you asked yourself that question?
The stress of being in the office can sometimes stick to all of us. And not that we don't have to be in the office, you know, especially these days, and none of us are working from home. At least I have for a few years now, since I'm not in my corporate job anymore. But if you are in your office job right now, and you are asking yourself, When am I going to have some time off? And yes, we had a whole entire year, many of us probably have a lot of time, quote, unquote, because we were in a pandemic, but were you really, were you at home, doing work and taking care of the kids and taking care of the house and taking care of everything else. And you forgot a little bit about yourself, even during the pandemic?
I bet that this happened to many of you. The stress of being in an office is different than the stress of being at home. And I do understand that but we all need to refresh our minds is resting. So did you, my friend, will be more productive at work, and at home for the next several years of whatever time you want to be working. And well, you definitely want to be with your family for many, many years.
So one of the most important things I wanted to talk about today is what are the benefits of taking a break from work, you know, of when you are at home working too hard. You work for yourself, sometimes even work a little harder. And that's okay because you won't get it for yourself. But you need to take that time off.
So one of the benefits is my friends, that you are going to have a healthier body, and mind, and heart. Because we start creating habits. You know, if you're reading a little bit on my social media, I talked a lot about habits. When we create a habit of taking that rest, at least, I don't know, once every two weeks, you can take a day off for you. Yes, I know, you probably I can't do it. Stop telling yourself that you can't. I used to be that person. But you know, sometimes you can work a little longer and take the whole entire day off for you and do something significant and intentional for yourself.
It's better to work a little longer one day, and then take an entire day for yourself, I promise you, that you will be so refreshed and ready to go. So people who are always overworking, go through stress and frustration and sometimes even anger or sadness. And I don't know other negative emotions. Every single day, my friends, this can be happening every single day to many of you. So I want you to take a look deep inside. If you are going through anything that's like that. This can be led to serious health problems.
And I'm going to tell you some of those: Heart disease, depression, high blood pressure, stroke. And even I don't want to say the word but I'm going to spell it C - A - N - C - E - R. Okay? So I remember, when I was at my corporate job, I got really, really sick. And, of course, I had to go to the doctor - actually went to the ER. And then I was diagnosed with some heart issues, believe it or not, as healthy as I was, quote, unquote, I was working for a health and wellness company. And believe it or not, I was not taking care of myself, my heart, and my body.
I was working outside a lot working out like a crazy person. Every day, I was squeezing my work out in, no matter what, but I was taking a lot of time of my day, you know, to squeeze that in, to be able to finish everything that I needed to get done. Because I have big goals that I needed to accomplish. But guess what, not taking a rest was huge. So I ended up in an ER, having heart issues, and all that. And that's what happens when you don't take a rest. The beauty of that is there is a wake-up call for many people to take care of themselves. But don't wait until you get there.
My friends, this episode is to prevent you from getting there. I don't want you to go through what I went through, I want you to start taking care of yourself, now. You know, your body needs to sleep. I was waking up so early in the morning in the dark, and I was coming home and it's dark, you guys. So when you get a good night's sleep, you feel stronger, you feel energized. It rejuvenates your body. So you can have better days, with work with family, with everything that you're doing in the world. And that's what I want you to do. So it's also necessary for you to do relaxing activities, especially if you're just starting a new job.
Okay, and that was my biggest mistake, when I landed this job, I felt like I was in heaven. And I wanted to give my best. I wanted to give everything and everything meant many, many, many hours, no rest. And so I remember let me get you the story. I fall asleep I remember I fall asleep at a stoplight. So yes, I did, I was driving after a day of work. And I was going on earlier according to me it wasn't too early, and I remember stopping at a red light for a second. I thought it was a second but I think it was longer than that because I remember that I woke up to the car behind me. You know just like waken me up with the noise at night. "Are you going to move forward lady?". Guys, I fall asleep on the red light. Yes, yes everyone, that happened to me. And that was another wake-up call. I'm not getting enough sleep. I'm not resting enough. I'm working too hard. But I kept ongoing. I kept on going until I ended up in here.
So this, the reasons why it's necessary for you and me who are working, you know we need to take a break. Why is the reason so important to take a break regularly, like you want to do this not just one set or one time, but regularly, okay, you want to do this a lot. It boosts your immune health condition, you know when I took the rest, and I mean, I resigned from my job, everything changed. And I'm not telling you to do that. But I'm telling you to prevent from doing this, prevent from burnout, prevent stress, prevent yourself from getting yourself to the ER, that was a defining moment to think about, what is it that I was doing wasn't really productive, and you know, productive is not just the result of numbers, but being productive shows you the result of your health and your wellness, in you productivity is actually, it actually will increase.
If you take care of yourself, if you take breaks from work, from home, from wherever it is that's consuming you. Taking short breaks, maybe like going for a walk or going out with your co-workers to lunch. Guys, I wasn't even taking a lunch break sometimes. I was eating on the go, that's how bad it was, you know. Take breaks, take your lunchtime, sit down and eat your meal. I wasn't doing that pretty often, I was skipping it because I was too busy.
You know, I will say no to going out with my friends during the weekends because I was too tired to do that. Not because I don't have the money to go have lunch with my friends or dinner, I didn't have the time, because I was too tired. The time was there. Well, a day and a half that I was taking off, the time was there but the energy wasn't. I haven't had the energy to do it. Just the thought of putting on my clothes and you know, putting on makeup and getting ready was stressful. And that should be something that should be fun to do. You should be thinking, I can't wait for the weekend so I can do something for myself. That was not the case. In case I cannot wait for the weekend so I can just lay on the couch and do nothing for a few hours. Get the rest of the time, I was too busy catching up with everything that I was not doing during the week. And by Sunday night, I was getting ready to start all over again.
My friends, that is that a way of living. I promise you there is a better way, and a better way is to take the time to make sure that you have the energy to take a rest and to enjoy your life. Because we only have one life, that I know. Okay, maybe another life out there. But I haven't noticed that one yet. I don't know that one yet. So please take the time to rest. Protect yourself, increase your energy by resting and you will increase your productivity as well.
I hope this made sense to you. I hope this added value. And just to remind you, that self-care is not selfish. And self-care, taking time for you is not selfish. Self Care takes us some of the energy that you assert in your job. Okay, that is what you need to do and yes, if you need to ask for extra time, do it! Boost your health by taking that rest. Okay, I hope this added value to you and see you in the next episode. Please share with your friends and your families. And I'll see you next time. Have a fabulous time, my friends. Bye-bye.
